General Architectural
Given the highly visual nature of this exceptionally strong product, Perspex can be specified into a wide variety of lighting, cladding and decorative applications.
Flooring
Many entertainment buildings (eg. dance halls and restaurants either interior or exterior) use the light transmitting property of Perspex to provide design features. The surface hardness of Perspex is usually acceptable for floors and if required the surface gloss can be refurbished by polishing.
Balcony Guards
Perspex has been used for balcony guard in-fill panels globally for over 20 years. Typically, 6 mm and 8 mm sheets are used to ensure rigidity and impact strength. The exceptional weathering performance of Perspex ensures that no significant loss of mechanical properties takes place over a number of years.
Security Glazing
Clear Perspex of the correct thickness can be used as security glazing for protection against projectiles from hand guns and other firearms. The superb clarity of Perspex makes it particularly attractive for the protection of prestigious offices, banks and other public buildings. Perspex may also be used as self-supporting structures, free from metal framing, for added design appeal. Perspex can be laminated with other glazing materials, eg. glass and polycarbonate, to produce high specification bullet resistant glazing.
Roofing
Perspex has been extensively used as a roofing product in applications such as moulded domelights and continuous rooflights or barrel vaults.
Aquaria
Clear Perspex cast sheet can be used for the glazing of water tanks and aquaria. The ease with which Perspex can be thermoformed enhances the design potential for tanks and aquaria.
Perspex is a combustible material and if ignited will continue to burn. Perspex cast acrylic sheet has a combustion rate similar to hard woods, but unlike many other plastic materials, burning Perspex produces very little smoke, an important fire safety benefit. Burning Perspex, while melting, will not produce molten droplets and therefore will not promote the spread of fire. Extruded sheet has a rate of combustion similar to Perspex cast sheet, but will melt and produce molten droplets which will continue to burn.
Cast Acrylic Sheet from Perspex South Africa can easily be formed and fabricated by simple workshop processes such as heat bending, sawing, drilling, polishing and routing. Perspex can also be fabricated by experienced vacuum forming, drape forming and press forming artisans into a wide variety of exciting applications. Perspex is supplied with a protective clear layer of cladding which ensures the surface remains scratch free for as long as possible.
